lyrics
(Verse 1)
Call me Pyrrhus. Bend your ear. I was captain of a privateer.
We sailed the sea for many years in search of bands of buccaneers.
We did our job. We did it well. We had no fault that we could tell,
But that was in the tides of yesteryear.
(Verse 2)
One cloudy day upon the sea, we saw a ship of piracy.
But when we drew closer, we could see ‘twas a band of highest infamy.
Then the clouds unleashed and the rain poured down and the fog had settled all around.
The picaroons drew nearer steadily
(Bridge)
Our chance of flight was cut by thunder.
If we lived, it’d be a wonder.
We were doomed; we’d go down fighting.
So I thought and so I shouted:
(Chorus)
Light your hearts! Steel your nerves!
Burn the cloaks of terror from you!
Lose your sense of self and throw your cares away.
Ready arm! Steady mind!
Follow your subconscious sense of duty.
You'll be hailed as heroes if you fight today.
(Verse 3)
Rallied by my commanding roar, the guns were manned and the sails were low’red.
But after cannonballs had soared, they’d drawn up next to our starboard.
My men grew nervous at the thought of such close encounters in this onslaught.
But we had chosen glory by the sword.
We shouted (Chorus)
(Verse 4)
Before our rally cry was done. All vestiges of fear were shunned.
We clashed our swords and shot our guns and the pirates dwindled one by one.
It looked as though we'd had it set to eliminate the Pirate threat.
But the battle with our fate was not yet won.
(Bridge 2)
We could not sing amidst the fight
So up above the lookout cried:
(Chorus)
(Verse 5)
Well, the lightning crashed and the thunder roared and the lightning struck the lookout's sword.
The ships were wracked by such a storm that the masts were snapped and the sails were torn.
We fought each other to the bitter end and neither had a boat to rend.
And the heartless sea kept rolling as before.
(Bridge 3)
I alone survived the day
For I had fallen from the fray
As I was carried by the tide
My glory slipped away, I cried:
(Chorus)
"My heart’s ablaze and nerves afire
And now my heart is melting from me.
My very self is pouring in the sea.
My ready arm and steady mind
Have nothing more that they can do me.
Alone I bear the burden of today.”
(Verse 6)
And that is how you find me here, a rusty old ex-privateer.
My life is ruined, it is clear, but towards my death I’ll not draw near
For certainly there is no glory for the man who ends his story
When he’s sailed the tides of yesteryear.
